Former Israeli leader Ariel Sharon died on Saturday at the age of 85. He had been comatose since suffering a stroke in 2006.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called him “a great warrior and military leader” whose “memory will live forever in the nation’s heart.” The official Israel Defense Forces Twitter account remembered Sharon as a “courageous leader and defender of Israel.”
